Pearl Harvest (Hamaage / Tamahagi)

浜揚げ(珠はぎ)

Hello from Tensei Pearl.

This time, we would like to show you the pearl harvest (hamaage, or tamahagi) we carried out recently.

Hamaage means taking the pearls out of the pearl oysters.

The size, color and shape of a pearl cannot be known until the shell is opened.

How the pearls we have carefully raised over about two years have turned out… it is a nerve-racking task.

Many producers harvest before the new year in time for pearl competitions, but since we do not enter competitions, we harvested at this time of year, as we did the previous year.

The work is divided among the team.

First, we remove the oysters from the nets, open them and line them up.

Next, we separate the flesh containing the pearls from the adductor muscle.
